Facility Accreditation Program - General Information

Return to Facility Accreditation Program Home.

What is ISCD Facility Accreditation? How does it differ from ISCD Certification?

ISCD Facility Accreditation is a systemic assessment of all components within a facility that specializes in skeletal assessment.   In contrast, the ISCD Certification Program attests the INDIVIDUAL clinician or technologist’s mastery of a body of knowledge as evidenced by their successful completion of the ISCD Certification Exam. To comply with ISCD Facility Accreditation Essential Elements, the Facility Director, all Clinicians and all Technologists are required to be ISCD Certified or its equivalent.  For 2007, program applicants will be limited to facilities located in the United States. The ISCD Facility Accreditation Council expects the program to become international and be offered to selected countries outside the United States.

Who or what does the ISCD accredit?

The ISCD Facility Accreditation Program will accredit all practice-based units that use DXA to assess skeletal health.  These facilities include: hospitals, medical clinics, private medical offices, research facilities (using standard DXA protocols only), mobile DXA centers, and free-standing densitometry centers.  The performance of all facility personnel (clinicians, technologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, research scientists, physicists, and support staff) is assessed as part of the accreditation process.  Quality control and quality assurance of the equipment located at the unit, accuracy and precision of the scans generated, regulatory compliance, general business operations, and interfacing with patients and referring physicians is also part of the accreditation process.

What is the difference between the Facility Accreditation Registration Form and the Facility Accreditation Application Form?

To begin the Facility Accreditation process, you must first complete the Facility Accreditation Registration Form.  This form collects basic information about your DXA facility.  Information requested includes the configuration of your DXA center (i.e., number of machines, number of technologists, report writers, etc.).  This form will also compute the total cost of the program for your facility.  Once you have registered for the program and paid your $500 registration fee (non-refundable), the Facility Accreditation Manager will issue you a start date for you to begin the process of filling out the Facility Accreditation Application Form.  You will be given 90 days to complete this aspect of the process.

What is in the online Accreditation Application?

The application will consist of the following:

  • A general question and answer form
  • A list of Provisional Submissions for facilities in operation for less than one (1) year, or Full Submissions for facilities in operation one (1) year or more
  • Scan case studies
  • Report case studies

  • ISCD Facility Accreditation Agreement between the ISCD and the applying facility

  • Reassures the public that clinicians and technologists meet the highest standards achievable based on current scientific knowledge
  • Full instructions on how to upload scans, reports, documents, and all compliance materials in appropriate formats

How do facilities get an Accreditation Application?

A registration form is available online. A registration fee (non-refundable) will be assessed that will be applied to the total application fee. Your facility must register in order to receive an application package online. Neither registration forms nor applications will be e-mailed.

How much will ISCD Facility Accreditation cost the applying facility?

The cost to become accredited will be based on a fixed fee for the components of the primary facility plus a fee for each variable.  See Application Fees document for more details.

Will ISCD Facility Accreditation satisfy requirements of the insurance industry?

One of the program’s goals is to foster cooperation and continued discussion with the insurance industry and policy makers.  The Essential Elements of the program are designed to satisfy all interested parties.

Why should a facility be accredited? What are the benefits of obtaining ISCD Facility Accreditation? When do we see a benefit?

The benefits to your facility begin the minute you recognize the need for EXCELLENCE in the assessment of skeletal health. Accreditation:

  • Protects the public with quality patient management
  • Minimizes the possibility of misdiagnosis due to differences in DXA technology, acquisition, reference databases, reporting, and terminology between facilities
  • Guards against misinterpretation due to random variability inherent in DXA measurements
  • Reassures the public that clinicians and technologists meet the highest standards achievable based on current scientific knowledge
  • Insures legal compliance with regulatory bodies
