Program Overview
The incidence and economic impact of osteoporotic fractures continue to grow as our population ages. It has been suggested that osteoporosis is a pediatric disease that is expressed years later. Thus, the long-term skeletal effect of societal lifestyle changes on children and younger adults is of concern. Dissemination of information regarding low bone mass, fracture risk, diagnosis and intervention among health care providers is crucial. Definition and implementation of diagnostic and treatment recommendations, based on estimation of fracture risk, will have a major impact on patient care. Emerging advances and diversification of dual-energy x-ray (DXA) technology are expanding the clinical utility of bone densitometers. The continuing advances in the field of osteoporosis and the aging of the American population support the need for further education of professionals involved with skeletal health.
Target Audience
The target audience for this educational activity is clinicians, technologists, researchers, scientists, and healthcare providers who wish to learn skills and techniques in quality skeletal assessment to implement into their practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Summarize basic skeletal biology and bone mass assessment to establish a foundation on which to build a more advanced knowledge of skeletal health.
- Identify changes to diagnostic and treatment guidelines as they are affected by the implementation of absolute fracture risk
- Recognize the affect that disease states and their management have on bone health
- Discuss the impact that technical advances in the field of dual-energy x-ray (DXA) technology could have on clinical practice
- Compare and contrast current and emerging therapies to treat osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk
Accreditation Statement
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Cincinnati and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor CME for physicians.
Credit Designation
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 24.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is committed to resolving all conflict of interest issues which may arise as a result of prospective faculty members significant relationships with drug or device manufacturers. Our mandate is to retain only those speakers with financial interest that can be reconciled with the goals and educational integrity of the program.
CE Credit
The meeting qualifies for up to 23.5 category A credits through the ASRT..
Policy on Commercial Support and Faculty Disclosure
The ISCD maintains a policy on the use of commercial support which ensures that all educational activities supported by the ISCD provide in-depth presentations that are fair, independent, free of commercial bias and scientifically rigorous. To this end, all speakers are required to complete a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form. All disclosures will be included in the program book.
Clinicians - CME Certificates
Full instructions for completing your evaluation of the 2007 Annual Meeting will be included in the program book. A CME certificate will be created during that process for you to print for your records.
Technologists - CE Certificates
If you would like to receive Category A CE credit for the 2007 Annual Meeting, see the instructions provided on the back of the CE Verification Form that is part of your registration materials. Note that there are two steps that must be completed in order to receive your CE Certificate acceptable for ISCD recertification and ASRT credit.
