ISCD Special Event: Wine Tasting The Art of Wine Tasting
Do you simply drink wine, or do you taste wine? Anyone can drink wine, but it takes practice to be able to recognize and distinguish a wine's characteristics. Learn about tasting techniques and terms, how smell and taste are integral to the enjoyment of wine, the proper way to serve wine, what types of wine glasses are appropriate for certain wines, where you can go to participate in a wine tasting and how to act when you are there. ISCD's own enologist, Bill Griffin, MD, CCD, A.S. Viticulture & Enology, will be on hand to offer his input on how to pair wines as well as trivia to keep the event lively. |

The tour includes a picnic lunch, four winery stops, a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and then a 50-minute relaxing Ferry/Bay Cruise back to San Francisco. An additional fee applies. |
Purpose Statement
The incidence of osteoporotic fractures is increasing both in North America and globally.
Contributing to this is aging of the population, suboptimal diet and exercise in children and adolescents leading to low peak bone mass, more sedentary lifestyles in many parts of the world, and an increase in the prevalence of diseases and use of medications that lower bone mass. The need for tailored screening, diagnosis and treatment suitable for different cultures is therefore increasingly important. To this end, new technologies and treatments should be assessed and appropriate standards and guidelines developed and implemented. Position statements arising from ISCD conferences will be helpful in this regard. The ISCD Annual Meeting will help as a forum to educate healthcare professionals and assist them to successfully diagnose, prevent and treat osteoporosis worldwide.
Target Audience
The target audience for this educational activity is clinicians, technologists, researchers, scientists, and healthcare providers who wish to learn the skills and techniques of quality skeletal assessment to implement in their practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Compare and contrast approaches to diagnosing, screening, managing, and treating osteoporosis according to various national guidelines
- Evaluate the utility of the technologies available for bone health assessment in clinical practice
- Recognize the impact of certain disease states and medications on skeletal health to initiate treatment earlier than you did prior to the ISCD Annual Meeting or to make changes to existing treatments
- Apply the recommendations made during the 2007 Adult and Pediatric Position Development Conferences (PDC) in adult and pediatric populations
