Osteoporosis Management Monographs

PROGRAM PREVIEW

An estimated 44 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass placing them at increased risk for fracture. This risk becomes more profound after menopause, when ther ate of bone loss accelerates.  At the onset of menopause, women often seek a clinician’s guidance; this is an opportunity to evaluate and discuss osteoporosis prevention approaches.

Osteoporosis prevention begins with life-long promotion of adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, exercise, and smoking avoidance or cessation.  However these measures alone cannot ensure the prevention of osteoporosis.  Depending on individual risk factors and bone mineral density, preventative treatment including bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), teriparatide, and calcitonin.

The first Continuing Education module focuses on the role of bone densitometry in the management of osteoporosis.  The second Continuing Education module focuses on prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Part 1 - The Role of Bone Densitometry

This educational program reviews the pathophysiology of osteoporosis, it's detection, and clinical issues in bone density testing. The program takes into consideration the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommendations and the Official Positions of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. After completing this activity, the reader should:

  • State the epidemiology and impact of osteoporosis
  • Describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis
  • Discuss the diagnosis of osteoporosis using bone densitometry
  • Review the risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures
  • Compare the common techniques for measuring Bone Mineral Density
  • Credits available towards ISCD Recertification

This self-study has been approved for 1.5 category A credits through the ASRT.

Part 2 - Prevention and Treatment

This program reviews the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Both the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic prevention measures are reviewed. After the completion of this program, the program participant should be able to:

  • Describe lifestyle and dietary modifications for the prevention of osteoporosis
  • Discuss measures to prevent falls in those at risk for fractures
  • Compare the various treatments in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis
  • Review considerations in the selection of therapies for osteoporosis
  • Credits available towards ISCD Recertification

This self-study has been approved for 1.5 category A credits through the ASRT.
