Pediatric BDC Course
The International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) provides comprehensive educational courses in bone densitometry and offers certification for those who perform DXA scans and interpret the results.
ISCD is now offering the Pediatric Bone Densitometry Course (Pedi BDC), an advanced densitometry course that provides an overview of obtaining and interpreting bone mineral density (BMD) measurements in children and adolescents. There are caveats that arise in the interpretation of BMD results from growing and developing children. Lectures will review children in a pediatric practice who may be at risk for a low BMD; a definition of osteoporosis in pediatric patients; diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in the child or adolescent with chronic disease; appropriate reporting of pediatric bone density results; and a review of peripheral quantitative tomography (pQCT) and other modalities to evaluate the peripheral skeleton. The course is open to clinicians, technologists, scientists, researchers, and healthcare providers who wish to learn more about pediatric densitometry.
Upcoming Pedi BDC Courses
All ISCD Course locations and dates are listed on the Upcoming Courses page
Course Objectives
After attending the course, participants will be better prepared to:
- Discuss the definition of osteoporosis in children and adolescents
- Recognize risk groups of children in a pediatric practice who are at risk for developing early bone loss and osteoporosis
- Consider issues that arise in the assessment of skeletal health in children with chronic disease
- Review recommendations for reporting bone densitometry results in pediatric patients and appropriate adjustments for bone size, bone age, and puberty
- Review measurement tools outside of DXA for acquiring bone density assessments (e.g., pQCT, ultrasound)
Credit Designation
The International Society for Clinical Densitometry designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMAPRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Accreditation Statement
The International Society for Clinical Densitometry is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to offer continuing medical education for physicians.
CE Credit
ISCD will be applying for ASRT Category A Continuing Education Credit.
Target Audience
The course is open to clinicians, technologists, scientists, researchers, and healthcare providers who wish to learn more about pediatric bone densitometry.
