2020 Abstract Awards

Annually, as part of our Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony, ISCD presents awards for outstanding Abstracts in the categories of Best Young Investigator, Best Technologist, and Best Clinician abstract winners. While unable to present their abstracts in person at this year’s meeting, all accepted abstracts have been submitted to the Journal of Clinical Densitometry for potential publication in the December issue. This year we are pleased to recognize the Best Young Investigator, Best Technologist, and Best Clinician abstract winners below.

Young Investigator Abstract Award
Presented to: Dr. Maria Dea Tomai Pitinca, MD

“Use of Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-spectrometry Technology in Patients with Spine Artifacts: A New Diagnostic Opportunity”
Summary: a radiofrequency technique (REMS) applied to DXA patients with confounding lumbar spine conditions shows lower lumbar T-scores than DXA. Femoral REMS and DXA BMD and T-scores correlate highly, as does lumbar REMS with femoral DXA measures. REMS is highly reliable compared with DXA and better assesses BMD in these conditions.

Best Abstract by a Technologist

“Pre-operative Skeletal Status in Elective Total Knee Arthroplasty Candidates”
Summary: Results from 25 of proposed 100 patients prior to total knee arthroplasty. Standard DXA, TBS, and VFA performed as well as manual placement of stepped pairs of custom distal femoral and proximal tibial ROI’s. Custom ROI BMD at all sites correlated with highly (p<0.001) with FN BMD. Periarticular ROI’s correlated with TH BMD at r2 =0.66-0.89, and shaft ROI’s at r2 = 0.48-0.72. No BMD differences with contralateral side. Custom ROI’s correlate well with standard BMD and might better represent bone health status in TKA.

“Frequency of Normal DXA and T-Score Osteoporosis in Postmenopausal Women With Fracture: A Registry-Based Cohort Study”
Summary: 6% of a Manitoba female 50+ cohort with fragility fractures < = 5 years before DXA had normal DXA results; prevalence declined with age (1% at 80+). Normal BMD had very low prevalence in those with hip fracture and incident fracture (1-4%), and T-score osteoporosis ranged from 40-66% in this subgroup. Adding abnormal TBS results increased proportion with abnormal scores to 61-81%. Normal bone scores (DXA and TBS) are rare in those with fractures and adding TBS increases the identification of abnormal bone status. Using T-score OP alone will miss treatment candidates at high fracture risk.
