Title: August 2013 – Is this a believable increase in BMD?

A 22.8 year-old Caucasian male with a history of severe hyperparathyroidism and renal calculi underwent parathyroidectomy in July 2005. He has a 2 cm mass in the right mandible.  A first BMD test is shown below, performed on GE Lunar Prodigy densitometer.



One year after surgical treatment and normalization of his calcium with calcium supplementation, rocaltrol and HCTZ and a normal parathyroid hormone level, he returns for BMD testing:




  • The follow-up scans show phenomenal increases at all sites.  Are the scans valid for interpretation?
  • What further testing, if any, would you recommend?
